These are our Streets. Yet every year, 250,000 children and youth are killed in road traffic crashes – 700 young lives lost every day. This is the leading cause of death for young people worldwide. Now, the new generation is demanding action – to deliver streets for life free from dangerous roads and air pollution, and to combat climate change.
Safe and healthy streets where space is shared equitably, which encourage walking and cycling while keeping young people safe on their journeys to school and college are possible. The solutions to transform street design, solutions that protect children, young people, and the climate are proven, low-cost, and universal.
As a leading partner in the UN’s Streets for Life movement we call for the low-speed interventions which limit transport to 30 km/h (20 mph) where people and traffic mix to make streets healthy, green and liveable.
We need streets for youth, for health, for social justice and for climate. We need streets for life. These are our Streets.
700 children die every day on the world’s roads and it is the poorest families who suffer the most.
In four steps we can transform our streets, reduce injuries, tackle car dependency, combat climate change, challenge poverty, racism and social exclusion.
We all have the right to walk our streets and neighbourhoods in safety. To meet our friends, to travel to our education. To explore our communities. It is time to fight for our rights.
This is our future. This is our world. These are our streets. And it is time to reclaim them.
